Buyer’s remorse is a feeling that we’re all too familiar with. Recent research provides insight into the phenomenon. Buyer’s remorse occurs essentially when the purchaser finds some evidence that a recent purchased is defective or inappropriate. This is actually a classical example of cognitive dissonance. When people are confronted with evidence that their new acquisition is undesirable, they will either try to discount this evidence, or regret and renounce their purchase. This regret and renunciation is what we know as buyer’s remorse.

Regret and anxiety can settle in strongly because the stakes are so high. The excitement of that big purchase leads us to ignore economic realities. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common disorder affecting Americans. According to the United States National Library of Medicine, one in six people have some symptoms of IBS (2011). It causes pain and cramping, bowel movement problems, and other symptoms. Scientists still do not know the exact reason people get IBS. Sometimes IBS happens after colon infections, but science also knows intestines and a person’s brain connect through nerves. This leads scientist to believe that stress may cause or heighten the symptoms of IBS.

It is likely someone has IBS if he or she suffers from abdominal pain, fullness, gas, or bloating for a long period, usually three months. However, the symptoms are not usually constant and sometimes go away after bowel movements. Doctors generally prescribe medicine such as bisacodyl, lopermaide, tricyclic antidepressants, lubiprostone, or rifaximin. Although these prescriptions may help alleviate symptoms, they also have troubling side effects. Many people with IBS choose naturopathic cures such as herbs.

Many herbs have medicinal values, and naturopathic doctors are making a comeback in America. Naturopathic doctors recommend three common healing herbs for irritable bowel syndrome; chamomile, psyllium, and evening primrose oil. It is important to note, although herbs are natural, they can cause side effects. People should consult their doctors before consuming herbs.

Most people think of chamomile as a relaxing tea to help soothe the nerves. Although this is true, people also use chamomile as a pill form and as a lotion. Chamomile helps soothe and heal insomnia, anxiety, muscle twitches, wounds, skin conditions, and stomach problems. Chamomile is a strong antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory, making it a perfect herbal remedy for IBS (lifescript, 2005).

Psyllium helps move waste through a person’s intestine. Psyllium comes from an herb called Plantago ovata, which produce thousands of seeds. The seed husks are psyllium. When psyllium contacts water, it swells, helping make solid waste in the digestive tract. Psyllium effectively cures or soothes diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (UMMC, 2011).

Peppermint oil helps alleviate many of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It calms muscles within the stomach and allows more bile, a digestive enzyme, to flow. The oil also helps flatulence and bloating. However, peppermint oil may cause rashes if put on skin and worsen gallstones (UMMC, 2011).

With these three herbs, it is important for people to use moderation. Doctors do not know of any specific side effects with chamamomile and psyllium; however, it is still wise to see a doctor first and slowly accustom one’s body to the herb. Herbs may help soothe the effects of irritable bowel syndrome without causing a host of other problems, like prescription drugs.  There are also other alternative therapies to keep in mind, like hypnotherapy for IBS, for example.
